Why does Gatsby appear as he does?

MzuGD

At the end of Chapter 1, Mr. Gatsby makes a brief appearance. Why do you think F. Scott Fitzgerald chose to have Jay Gatsby appear in the story as he does? What was significant in those last two paragraphs of the chapter? What characterization is Fitzgerald building by what he does in Chapter 1? Ground your reasoning with textual evidence.

  1. They make Gatsby appear as a god. I think that characterizes him as a mysterious, because he just appeared and then he disappears. Which allows him to take control of the moment in the chapter, and shows that Gatsby is a god like figure.

  2. I Feel the reason Gatsby is seen at the very end of the first chapter is because at first it seems that daisy and Tom have the full power and control over people.Gatsby is talked about a few times and it was as if without trying Gatsby already captured some of the attention, I feel at the end the author shows that Gatsby is going to show how truly important he is. Gatsby leaves the empty dark shadow in a way something he created, allowing Tom and daisy gain the control. This is significant because him leaving the dark shadow it looks as if he’s done hiding sort of showing he’s importance or a transition of the power shifting to him. he’s going to show who he is and show how great he can be.

  3. Gatsby appears as suspicious and mysterious because he just appeared . So instead of Nick Carraway introducing himself he observes him instead. As stated in the second to last paragraph “I saw that I was not alone – fifty feet away a figure had emerged from the shadow of my neighbor’s mansion and was standing with his hands in his pocket regarding the silver peppers of the stars”.What was significant in the last two paragraphs was the way Gatsby emerges from the shadows to raise his hand to a green light , just to disappear at the blink of a eye.He is giving the reader a mystery to solve behind Gatsby’s first spotting

  4. I feel like author is portraying Gatsby as a rather mysterious person. We don’t know much about him since the first chapter is mostly about tom and daisy. Gatsby is shown at the end to get the readers attention. The author is building gatsby as a intimidating person because when we first see him he is alone in the dark and even after that he just disappears getting the reader a little spooked and confused

  5. Gatsby appears as suspicious and mysterious because he just appeared . So instead of Nick Carraway introducing himself he observes him instead. 6. The author portrays Gatsby as a mysterious and intimidating character. The last 2 paragraphs show that Gatsby is there and alone in the dark and nick doesn’t do anything just watches the gatsby vanishes. Gatsby doing that changes the momentum as the story had been about tom and daisy but then there’s a sudden shift to Gatsby.

  7. The reason the author makes Jay Gatsby appear in the ending of chapter 1 because Gatsby is main character also in the rest of book it’s only going to be talking about Gatsby, his life , and the people around him.

  8. The author wanted gatsby to be introduced in the book the way he did because he will show great significance throughout the entire book. The last two paragraphs are important because it already shows that nick has admiration for gatsby when he talks about him. Gatsby can be characterized as a god because nick describes actions that he does that seem like if he was another being or a god like figure.

  9. The author wanted to show us that Gatsby has power that people don’t see it like he can make people do things without him telling them to do it. Also it want to know that Gatsby is more than just a character he is the main story he has the everything.

  10. The author wanted to show us how Gatsby work his power that he make people do things with out him telling them to do it. Also that he is not just a character he is main thing and that he make the story what it is.

  11. They made Him seems like a mythical creature. In the text Nick looked away for a moment and looked back and Gatsby was gone. I think F Scott Fitzgerald made him seem like that because perhaps he is not comfortable with people seeing his true self, maybe he is insecure, i don’t think he does it to look fake more like to hide his true identity. You see this in the text when it says, “I could have sworn he was trembling.”

  12. Perhaps Gatsby appears as he does in order for us to be curious about him. He has no dialogue, his actions are a bit odd and he appears alone. These are i think all purposely done for us to wonder about him.

  13. Gatsby appear the way he was in chapter one because the author may be trying to show the reader that gatsby is going to be a powerful person in the book. Also he appear that way because he going to play a big role in the book.

  14. I believe the author is trying to make Gatsby appear as a very interesting man that has some secrets that he ones no one to find out.
what was significant about the last two chapters is how Gatsby is reaching out to the water as if trying to reach someone across or remembering something about the past. Fitzgerald characterizes Gatsby as mysterious because in the book Nick is drawn to what Gatsby was doing and all of a sudden Gatsby disappeared.

  15. i think that jay Gatsby is trying to be showed as a very mysterious character that is hiding many things.but i also am starting to see many patterns in the book about how characters have these secretes hidden within them for example daisy she seems like shes happy but truly as nick observed she was not happy with tom, and in the other hand when Jordan talks about Gatsby she speaks about his wild party’s so when you think about someone that party’s you seem to expect them to be loud friendly sociable but when nick finally sees him in the back of his mansion in the bay he is quite reaching towards something across the river like if he missed or regretted something. Fitzgerald also explains that Gatsby was trembling upon the green light which by this we infer there is something across from him that he fears the question hat Fitzgerald leaves us with in the chapter is what does he fear.

  16. I feel that Fitzgerald is presenting Gatsby as a man of secret, who is facinated by things someone would totally misinterpret or even ignore. When Gatsby would appear on his dock, he begins to reach into the darkness ahead of him, perhaps he tries to reach for somethings he so desires, but is unable to aquire. In the darkness of night where nobody can see him (at least that’s what he thought), he would become who really is or who he wants to be. The flashing mysterious green light to which he is concentrating, may be a representation of himself since it appears and disappears constantly, just like Gatsby himself appearing and disappearing instantaneously from his dock without any notice. I believe Gatsby will become a different person to everyone he meets, this might also make him even more misteriois since no one may know the real Mr.Gatsby actually is.

  17. Scott f. Fitzgerlad characterizes Jay gatsby as god maybe because of how his riches have brought him many powers, and it shows because he has a lot of important people on his payroll. He also dissapears everytime Nick may be appearing to talk to someone.

  18. In the book Gatsby appears to be a mystery. He appears this way because no one really knows about him everything they say is a rumor nd lie. i think the author characterizes him this way too keep the readers guessing and wondering who gatsby really is.

  19. Mr. Gatsby is portrayed as intimidating and mysterious. he appears this way since no one really knows what or who is this Mr. Gatsby. So the author wants us as the readers to be intrigued to know who this Mr. Gatsby is.

  20. In the book “The Great Gatsby'”, Jay Gatsby is being characterize as a very suspicious and mysterious person. The reason why I say this is because in the beginning all that nick knew of gatsby is he’s a very rich man and he’s neighor. Everytime when anybody talks of gatsby they say he’s just a man name gatsby or say he’s a very rich man who throws parties every weekends. Besides that, there are a lot of rumors of him, people say that he killed a man before, that he was born in Germany or that he was a spy during World War I. This is why I characterize Jay as suspicious and mysterious because no one knows nothing about him, he’s just a man that everyone has a suspicion about.
